Learn More About the Differences in Our Implant Offerings

Same-Day Dental Implants vs. Traditional Dental Implants

Learn More About Our Implant Offerings

Dental implants are commonly used to replace missing teeth with implanted artificial teeth that blend in with your natural ones. There are different types of implants depending on how many missing teeth you need, running from single-tooth implants to full arch and even implant-supported dentures.

Something that has revolutionized the dental implant procedure is the availability of same-day dental implants, which cuts the waiting time between procedures from months to just hours. A traditional dental implant requires multiple surgeries that must be spaced out over months (sometimes taking up to 10 months) to allow for sufficient healing and osseointegration. However, same-day implants can be performed in a single procedure during one appointment.

Timeline of Dental Implants: Traditional vs Same Day Implants

Traditional Dental Implants: Traditional dental implants take so long to complete because a minor surgery is performed into the jawbone, where a metal screw is implanted. After this surgery, gums will need 1-2 weeks to heal.

However, it also takes up to 3-6 months for the bone to grow around the implant and cause it to fuse with the jawbone (a process called osseointegration). Only after this can the restoration process be performed.

This consists of another small incision into the jaw bone to attach an abutment to the titanium rod. This only takes 2 weeks to heal, but the crown that will be attached cannot be put on until 6 weeks after the abutment. The crown will be attached to the abutment in another separate appointment.

Same-Day Dental Implants: Same-day dental implants consist of a surgery that is performed all in one appointment. However, these dental implants are only a temporary measure until you can get something more permanent.

In total, you will need 3 dentist appointments, but the actual procedure is performed in one. The first appointment will be a consultation. Impressions of your teeth will be taken to match the crown to your regular teeth.

The second appointment is when the main procedure takes place and you will walk out with a fresh set of teeth implanted into your jawbone. No one will be able to tell the difference. At a third appointment, you will have a follow-up appointment months later, after you have healed from the surgery. This is when the permanent crowns will be placed.

Advantages of Same Day Implants

Same-day implants have the advantage of fusing to the bone more easily, faster healing, and the implants being placed right away prevent bacteria from entering the space. Same-day dental implants are convenient because the procedure can be performed all in one dental visit instead of being spaced apart for about a year and having to return to the dental office.

Interested in Dental Implants?

Do you have a gap in your smile? It’s important to fill spaces in your teeth to prevent your teeth from shifting, which can lead to decay. Bacteria can also enter into the missing space and cause further oral health problems. To find out if same-day dental implants are right for you, schedule a consultation with us at One Day Implants.
