Same-Day Dental Implants: 5 Things You Need to Know

5 Things You Need to Know About Same-Day Dental Implants

Dental implants are highly regarded as the best tooth-replacement option for missing teeth. However, the lengthy procedure which takes traditional implants months to complete can be a turn-off for patients looking for more immediate results.

Did you know that you can walk into our dental office at One Day Implants and leave with a complete implanted tooth restoration in just one appointment? Same-day implants eliminate the waiting time and need for multiple surgical procedures to give patients immediate results and quicker healing.

The Benefits of Same-Day Implants

Same-day implants give our patients immediate results with a fully completed dental implant and tooth restoration in just one appointment. This gives patients so much relief to be able to walk out of our office without worrying about gaps in the teeth or undergoing multiple surgeries. The sooner our patients can receive their new teeth, the sooner they can restore the function of their teeth and the appearance of their smile.

Not only do same-day implants give immediate results, but they also heal faster too. Since this procedure only requires one surgical procedure, the implant fuses to the bone better and the gums can heal faster. The gums are even at a lower risk for gum recession when receiving same-day implants and patients are less likely to experience tooth sensitivity.

The Risks of Same-Day Implants

The biggest risk of same-day implants is improper osseointegration. Osseointegration is the process of the implant becoming fused with the jawbone which usually takes 3-6 months. While same-day implants allow you to complete your  implant procedure all at once, the success of the procedure is still dependent on successful healing and osseointegration. As long as you follow your dentist’s instructions for aftercare, you’re no more likely to face implant failure than you are with traditional implants.

How Do They Compare to Traditional Implants?

The biggest difference between traditional and same-day dental implants is the length of the procedure and how many appointments are required. Traditional implants take 3 separate appointments to complete, not including the initial consultation and follow-up appointments.

It begins with the implantation of a titanium post in the jaw bone. Then, you have to wait 3-6 months for osseointegration to be complete before returning for your second appointment. At your next appointment, your gums will be reopened to attach an abutment to the implant. Then, finally, you receive your dental crown which will attach to the previous two parts 6 weeks after your second appointment.

Same-day implants are completed entirely in one appointment, eliminating the downtime between procedures, the need for separate appointments, and the need to reopen the gums. While it will still take 3-6 months for osseointegration to occur, you do not need to wait for this to happen before receiving the rest of your dental implant.

How Long is the Procedure?

The length of the procedure can vary and you may need to return for multiple visits if you are receiving multiple dental implants. The procedure could be as short as 30 minutes or as long as 3 hours. You will need to return for a follow-up appointment so we can check on the progress of your healing, osseointegration, and make sure there are no signs of implant failure.

What is the Success Rate?

Same-day implants have a success rate of 70% compared to the 95% success rate of traditional implants but it is continuing to improve. The success rate is lower because same-day implants are associated with a higher risk of movement than traditional implants.

However, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, success rates and differences in bone levels between the two procedures are statistically insignificant. Same-day implants are also associated with better healing of the gums, osseointegration, and save patients time and money.
